accountants are all registered to the United Kingdom accountancy bodies
who are themselves members of the Consultative Committee of Accountancy
Bodies. To be apart of this group is offer referred to by the UK market
as a specific qualification rather than a collection of qualifications that

There is no legal requirement for an accountant to be a member of one of
the many Institutes as the term UK accountant does not have the same legal
protection in the United Kingdom as that given to, say, doctors and lawyers.
There are, though, certain legal rights and duties which are available to
professionally qualified UK accountants such as registry to practice in
particular areas of the UK may require some of these requirements. This
includes institutes within this group such as:
• the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) being
the world's oldest professional body of accountants;
• the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW)
being the largest European accountancy/auditing body;
• The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) being
one of the world's largest and fastest-growing accountancy bodies.
There are many qualifications below this which are awarded by non-CCAB companies
and these include:
• Association of International Accountants (AIA)
• The Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA)
• Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT)
